COLOR and Communication

COLOR is an organization that focuses on Latina Women's rights. Their mission is to make sure that Latina women have the same amount of health care as every women in the U.S.. They want to help the underprivileged women who do not have a voice for themselves. They help the women who have different sexual orientations. And they help the women who are economically disadvantaged.
But not everyone knows about this organization. I know that before this class I had never heard of COLOR Latina before. And when I tell people who I'm volunteering with, they don't know who they are either. I am around Latina women all day, and yet none of these Latinas know what COLOR is. I haven't really seen much at the organization, but it seems that the only people who know of them, are the ones who are around the people associated with COLOR. As far as I can see, COLOR has not done a good job of communicating with the community.
But their event with Cafe Cultura sounds like a good way to help them get out into the community and send their message to the people. COLOR will team up with the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, Sisters of Color United for Education, and the Youth HIV Advocacy Coalition to honor March 10th National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and March 20th National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. At the event there will be free HIV testing, open mic for singing or poems, and two famous artists coming to share their poems and music. The event is for everyone, not just people of Latin decent. This will be a great way for COLOR to get their name heard.
I think a great way for COLOR to become known through out the community is to go to different colleges and send their message through word or fliers. They could also go to places where Latinas are seen often, like the Azteca Market. While working with COLOR I hope that I will be able to help spread the word about COLOR.
